We are seeking an exceptional Sr Technical Manager – Deployable Quantum Systems (DQS) in our Broomfield, Colorado location to lead a department designing, building, and validating trapped-ion quantum computers (TIQCs) to be deployed at customer sites. The overarching objective of the DQS department is to ensure that our TIQS offerings are rugged, compact, and easily shipped and reintegrated at remote sites. Partnering with colleagues in supply chain and other technical departments, this manager will be accountable to meet metrics such as system integration and validation schedule and recurring cost, as well as targets for associated learning curves. The leader will support and manage a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and physicists, and possibly first-line managers. This role will have a matrixed reporting relationship to the Director of On-Premise Projects and Operations.

Key Responsibilities: - Accountable for on-time delivery against business needs, seeking out-of-the-box creative solutions when needed over business-as-usual to hit business commitments
- Instill a culture of using engineering best practices around work instructions, engineering documentation, BOM, and document management
- Identify and act on areas of improving team productivity
- Build and design to reflect professional and aesthetic expectations of deployed hardware
- From high-level business goals, synthesize strategic plans for the technical department, including technical scope, schedule, and budget. Key objectives for this department are ruggedization and deployability of our TIQC systems for ease of deployment to customer sites. Recurring schedule and cost are the most direct metrics of success.
- Lead the team in design-for-ruggedization activities and validation of those designs at the system level.
- Partner with subsystem owners (electrical, optical, etc.) on their ruggedization and validation plans
Own and manage execution of the above plans, including - Tracking and reporting of progress against the plan (with Program Management)
- Department resource allocation and prioritization to meet the milestones
- Risk/opportunity identification and management
- Accountability for all department results (technical performance, scope, schedule, cost) and interdependencies with partner organizations
- Use of external partners and key suppliers to reduce hardware cost and cycle time
Identify department-level staffing needs and fill key gaps via - Mentorship, training, and managing of first-level managers
- Hiring, Cross-training
- Talent resource reviews
- Real-time coaching and feedback
- Succession planning
- Skip-level meetings
Serve as owner of all departmental lab spaces- Work with facilities, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), security, and IT as needed to communicate key requirements
- Partner with above orgs to identify and implement compliant procedures and processes
YOU MUST HAVE: - Bachelor’s degree minimum
- Minimum 5+ years of industry experience developing atomic physics or quantum computing systems
- Minimum 2+ years of technical managerial experience with direct-reporting technical personnel
- Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. person (defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status)
WE VALUE: - Bachelor’s or higher degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field preferred
- Experience managing managers
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field preferred
- Proven expertise in Atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics and/or quantum computing
- Experience in complex task management (cost, schedule, risk/opportunity, etc.)
- Strong organizational & leadership skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A cool, even-keeled temperament that keeps the conversation productive even in times of pressure and change
- Cross-functional mentality: commitment to empowering and enabling all organizations within the business
- Strategic thinking: aptitude for aligning tactical activities with strategic business objectives
- Programmatic acumen: experience creating, driving, and tracking complex project plans
