Requisition Id 14004
Overview:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to lead scientific projects aimed at advancing our understanding of quantum materials, with a primarily focus on utilizing neutron scattering techniques. This position resides in the Direct Geometry Group in the Spectroscopy Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As a postdoctoral fellow, you will join a team whose research interests include quantum spin liquid materials, frustrated magnetism, phase transitions and the interplay among degrees of freedom in strongly correlated materials. Your primary research will involve conducting elastic, inelastic and polarized neutron measurements on powder and single crystal materials using the world leading neutron scattering instruments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at ORNL. This position represents an excellent opportunity to study quantum matter in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment at ORNL.
As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform neutron scattering experiments and analyze data to understand quantum materials.
- Work with the project team to plan and execute neutron experiments
- Assist in developing experimental workflows to modeling spin-wave excitation from powders and single crystals.
- Report and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present results at international scientific conferences and meetings.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- PhD in physics, materials science, or related discipline completed within the last five years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in neutron scattering and condensed matter physics.
- A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
- Familiarity with neutron scattering methods to study magnetic materials.
- Experience with computational methods and data analysis.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems
Special Requirements:
As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity.
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
